Cory Davis · Advice to his high school self
What was your biggest failure or mistake in your career, and what did you learn from it?
Chasing Businesses Outside His Lane
Davis lost focus by jumping into competing business areas outside his expertise. He also failed to anticipate how competitors would respond. The lesson he took was to stay close to what he knows and to think through the other side's move before making his own.
What non-academic skills mattered most?
A strong work ethic. Davis puts it ahead of everything else.
How does he stay sharp and relevant?
Reading extensively, staying curious, and surrounding himself with industry experts.
What problem is he working on now?
A federal contract change at Medicare has made the primary testing method at his genetics lab financially unviable. He is working out how to adapt the lab to survive it.
What I Learned from Cory Davis

Know the Total Loss Before You Start

- 02
Risk Only What You Can Afford to Lose
He typically limits exposure to 5% of available cash.
- 03
Stay Inside Your Expertise
The businesses that hurt him were the ones he did not understand.
